7 Key Elements of the Marketing Mix

If you’re searching for ways to successfully market your products or services, then you have to get familiar with the 7 key elements of the marketing mix. What’s that you ask? These are the elements you must carefully consider when laying out your marketing plan. It includes the product, price, place, promotion, people, packaging, and process.

Without a better understanding of each individual factor and how it pertains to your business, you may have a hard time standing out against the competition. So, let’s dive into it!

What are the Elements of the Marketing Mix

An effective marketing strategy should always include an overview of your marketing mix. With this knowledge, you’ll know exactly how, when, and where to promote your products and services to reach your ideal customer.

Let’s start by getting familiar with the 4 Ps of marketing. This concept was first introduced in 1960 by E. Jerome McCarthy, a marketing professor at Michigan State University. His book Basic Marketing: A Managerial Approach, outlined this idea to help businesses efficiently launch their product or services into the market.

The 4 Ps of marketing include:

Product

A product or service being sold must satisfy a customer’s need or desire.

Place

The location(s) where the product or service can be found and purchased.

Price

What is the value of the product or service being offered and how much can an individual buy it for?

Promotion

How and where will you promote the product or service to reach your target audience?

To go even further, three additional components were later added to the elements of the marketing mix. This expansion included people, packaging, and process.

People

This refers to anyone who comes in contact with your customers, meaning your sales team or customer service.

Packaging

The packaging or visuals you incorporate into your promotions can help elevate your brand awareness and overall perception, which drives loyal customers.

Process

How each consumer interacts with your brand, either online or at physical locations, is vital to success. This is part of the customer journey phases and should be strategically thought out and carefully managed.

Why is the Marketing Mix Important

Understanding the elements of the marketing mix and how they pertain to your products and services, can make or break your business. If you’re unaware of how your product fits into the wants, needs, or demands of society, you’re launching into the market blindly.

As you take each of the 7 key elements of the marketing mix into consideration, you will start to see who your product is for, how much it should cost, where you’ll sell it, how you will promote it, and how consumers will interact with it. This is a crucial first step in developing an effective marketing strategy, so it shouldn’t be taken for granted.

How to Develop an Effective Marketing Mix

Whether you’re launching a new business or interested in expanding your product line, the marketing mix will set the foundation for your marketing plan. Start by analyzing one product at a time and going through these questions below to help you define your marketing mix.

Defining the Product or Service

First, it’s important to know exactly what you are offering and how it differs from the competition. Think about it from the customer’s perspective.

  • What need or demand does it fulfill?
  • What makes it appealing to customers?
  • What are its characteristics?
  • How will customers use it or experience it?
  • How does it differ from the competition?
  • What will customers gain from using it?

All of these questions can help in identifying your Unique Selling Proposition or USP. This is a short statement that clearly defines what you offer and how customers can benefit from it. The simpler your USP the better.

Identifying the Place

Next, you need to define where your product or service will be sold or distributed.

  • Where will consumers find your products and services? Is it sold online or in physical stores or both?
  • Will your items be sold using a third-party service, like Amazon or eBay?
  • Are you selling a luxury product or service that requires an appointment?

Consider every option of where you can potentially sell your new products.

Determining the Right Price

Pricing your items can be tricky. It requires a delicate balance of covering your costs and overhead to produce it while maintaining a competitive edge and still making a profit. Start by identifying:

  • What is the value of the item?
  • How much do you need to cover your costs?
  • How does the price compare to your competitors?
  • Will you offer discounts or limited promotions?
  • Are you offering a premium product or service?

How and Where to Promote

Now that you’ve defined the product, place, and price, let’s talk about promotions. This can include content marketing, paid digital ads, social media marketing, email marketing, influencer marketing, affiliate or brand ambassador marketing, paid search, physical mailers, or traditional advertising like print, television, or radio.

There are countless ways to get in front of your target audience. So it’s important to keep your customer in mind when identifying how and where to promote.

  • Where does your target audience hang out?
  • What are your competitors promoting?
  • What’s the best time to send out promotions?
  • What will your message be?

At this stage, it’s important to identify which channels your audience hangs out, define your messaging and personalization tactics, and test your content.

People

Your customer service can set you apart from the competition. Pay close attention to who you hire and how they interact with your customers. Just one bad experience can cause a ripple effect. Furthermore, one amazing experience can do just the opposite. Be sure to research and set up:

  • An effective CRM or Customer Relationship Management system to simplify your communications and sales team.
  • Feedback forms or surveys post-purchase
  • Customer incentives, rewards, or loyalty programs
  • Message response times on social media

Packaging

Build trust and create a memorable experience with your branding and packaging. The way your customers experience your brand can set you apart and reinforce value to your loyal customers. Consider clear visual elements and color choices that are instantly recognizable. Also, be sure to include relevant information about your brand and its history, mission, values, and ingredients. The more you can connect to your audience through your packaging, the more likely they are to stay.

Process

Customer experience is everything. Make sure to set up and manage every step of production, distribution, sales, and purchase to develop a seamless process. Keep a close eye on:

  • Level of Inventory (especially, around holidays and promotions)
  • Shipping costs and times
  • Staff scheduling
  • Sales Processes
  • Website and Mobile Optimization
  • Questions and response times on Social Media or Website

Every element of the marketing mix should be carefully researched and considered before launching. As these elements are crucial to the success of your content marketing strategy, be sure to keep them in mind as you make any changes. This will help capture your target audience and create a memorable experience for your everyone.
